Simply better work experience July 2010

Simon BeltSimon Belt, a web and computer support consultant, was asked by New Mills School Business and Enterprise College to provide work experience in July 2010 to school students so they could gain practical experience of writing articles for publications. As it is difficult for young people to gain commercial experience of journalism and writing for the web, I was more than happy to help them prepare and write-up some work for the New Mills Web on local businesses and organisations by way of them doing work experience.

Here's a timeline summary of what they did and achieved. Wish I'd have got them to work on my own website now..

Volunteer centre welcomes young people

Volunteer centre welcomes young people

Volunteer CentreWe've spent the last two weeks visiting and writing about local businesses, so we thought we'd take a look at a voluntary sector organisation. Where better than New Mills Volunteer Centre!

Upon arrival we were greeted by Cynthia and some of the other pleasant and enthusiastic staff and were offered a teacake and a cup of tea, before our interview took place. Located on Union Road, the Volunteer Centre is a bright and airy building where everyone is made to feel welcome.

A trip to Rik will do the trick!

A trip to Rik will do the trick!

Autotech Whaley BridgeAll of the small businesses we've interviewed have surprised us with how passionate they all were to promote their businesses and how they genuinely care for their customers. Although garages and mechanics aren't really mine and Molly's thing, we took on the challenge to find out about and write about Rik Maxwell's business.

Rik's business, Autotech in Whaley Bridge was chosen by Simon Belt, our taskmaster boss for the week, as his wife chats to Rik's girlfriend on the train to and from work - an example of informal business networking if ever there was! It turned out though that it wasn't completely random as Rik also helps New Mills school students with work placements and apprenticeships.

Marrying dresses to dreams

Marrying dresses to dreams

Georgia HowarthAs the 2010 prom season comes to an end, and year ten students are soon to become year elevens, the thing on every girls' mind , including ours is prom dresses! It's always a girl's preoccupation to look good and have their perfect dress - be it for their prom night or their wedding day. Writing articles about local business for our work experience, the business which appealed most to us was 'Cavendish', the bridal House in Hayfield.

We chose Cavendish Bridal House as we're already starting to think about our prom next year, and we wanted to make sure the dresses we choose are right for us and our shapes. So to find out more about matching dresses to special days and making sure those dresses or outfits would be right for the special lady we phoned Georgia Howarth to arrange an interview then set off with questions and notebooks in hand. The experience certainly helped us understand more of what's involved in the selection process and how someone with experience, passion and a sixth sense for these things can help make the right choices.

Golf club has charity day down to a tee!

Ray and NormanWe attended a charity day at New Mills golf club, for a man called Allen (Mick) Jones who sadly died from salmonella on a holiday in Portugal 3 and a half years ago. Mick, who was the life and soul of the party, had set up charity days at the golf club in the past and his preffered charity was the Ashgate Hospice in North Derbyshire, that provides specialist care for people who are dealing with the problems associated with a life-limiting illness.
